Middlesbrough player ratings: Martin Payero, Sol Bamba and Paddy McNair shine against Peterborough

Middlesbrough supporters were delighted with the performance of some of their players following the 2-0 win over Peterborough United at the Riverside Stadium.

Neil Warnock's hands were somewhat tied when selecting his team to face the Posh with a number of players being forced to compete in roles that were certainly out of their comfort zones.

However goals from Paddy McNair and young striker Josh Coburn were enough to claim a valuable three points and send fans home happy.

So who were Middlesbrough's top performers on the day? Iain Bentley dished out the ratings at the Riverside Stadium.

Goalkeeper: Joe Lumley - 6

A relatively quiet afternoon for the Boro keeper with only 2 shots registered on target for the Posh. Reliable when called on and has 2 clean sheets in 3 now.

Centre-back: Jonny Howson - 6

Avoided committing any serious mistakes and looked reassured slotting in as part of a central back-three. A genuine ‘Captains’ performance though? Let’s not get carried away…

Centre-back: Sol Bamba - 7

Boro’s only naturally fit defender gave a good account and held the line well. A solid performance in a strong makeshift defence.

Centre-back: Paddy McNair - 8

Showed real leadership in stepping up to take a well-placed pen in the 83rd minute. The calmest man in the ground when the pressure was on – did well.

Right wing-back: Marcus Tavernier - 7

Expected more from Tav in the first 45 but eventually found that elusive 3rd gear in the second half. Got into some good positions and was unlucky to not grab an assist in the final third of the game.

Central midfield: Matt Crooks - 6

Did his job well – seen much of the ball in central midfield and was reliable when needed. In a game that only swung late on in the last 10, hard to award more than 3.5 stars.

Central midfield: Martin Payero - 9

Another player with an ineffective first-half performance but came to life in the final 15. Looked delighted to have bagged himself a well-deserved assist in a low drilled cross for Josh Coburn to slot home. Now needs to kick-on.

Left wing-back: Onel Hernandez - 7

Another player who did well despite having to slot into an unfamiliar role. Still managed to register a handful of attempts on target and will be pleased to get 90 minutes in the bag.

Attacking midfield: Duncan Watmore - 7

Another player who did well despite having to slot into an unfamiliar role. Still managed to register a handful of attempts on target and will be pleased to get 90 minutes in the bag.

Striker: Uche Ikpeazu - 6

A quiet afternoon for big Uche and will be disappointed not to have added to his tally. Will be pleased to have 75 minutes in the tank having only played for 5+ minutes against Hull 2 weeks ago.

Striker: Andraz Sporar - 6

Expected more after having a successful international break with Slovenia having grabbed an assist and scoring a great goal against Malta last week. Still waiting for that second goal to kick-start his confidence.

Substitutes

Isaiah Jones - 7

Changed the dynamic of the game when introduced in the 75th minute. Showed flair, desire and drive to get forward. Got the crowd going and panicked Posh’s defenders when they were tiring the most. What more can you ask for from an impact sub?

Josh Coburn - 7

Brought on to replace Duncan Watmore who was suffering with cramp. Another player who had limited time to make any real sort of impact this afternoon.

James Lea Siliki - 6
