Talking Transfers: 10 Younger Players Boro Should Look to Sign

It's January 2021 and Boro are thin on the ground, so we asked the King of The Transfer Threads, Ben Strickland to give us his 10 younger players Boro should look to sign this transfer window.

Alfie Kilgour

Age – 23

Position – Centreback

Kilgour came through the youth system at Bristol Rovers and was soon sent out on loan to surrounding non-league clubs to further aid his development.

Neil Warnock has possibly the best Centreback pairing in the division, though hasn’t the squad depth to allow Nathan Wood go out and get necessary first team experience. Alfie Kilgour is a man who has been turning heads this season and has developed his game under Bristol Rovers manager Paul Tisdale. Ready to step up and play in a higher division, proven by his recent performance against Premier League strugglers Sheffield United.

Dan Glazer

Age – 24

Position – Defensive Midfield

The current Israel international has been at Maccabi Tel Aviv all his career barring two loan spells away. His contract is due to run out at the end of this season, though Tel Aviv has an option of a year extension; they may be tempted to sell if the right offer comes in.

Though Boro’s squad seems to be full of central midfielders, this transfer could allow players such as Lewis Wing leave the club and get regular football elsewhere. Boro had been linked with Glazer in the summer and to sign a player with Champions League experience would be a real coup.

Siriki Dembele

Age – 24

Position – Forward

Born in the Ivory Coast and began his youth career in Scotland at Dundee and Ayr United before the attacker won a place at the Nike Football Academy based at St George’s Park. Following this he signed a pro deal at Grimsby before capturing the attention at top clubs for his recent performances at Peterborough. 5 goals and 5 assists for Dembele so far this season. With Boro not appearing to have a 15/20 goals a seasoned player in their ranks, the goals need to be shared out amongst the squad. Utilising Siriki as an inside forward could go some way to achieving this.

Lewis Ferguson

Age – 21

Position – Centre Midfield

Ferguson began his youth career at his uncle Barry’s team Rangers before moving to Hamilton Academical and Aberdeen respectively. Ferguson is in the form of his life this season having made 11 goal contributions so far this season in just 17 appearances.

He is a player who could provide ample competition to apparent midfield mainstays Saville, Howson and Morsy. He is a classic box-to-box midfielder and a workhorse and a player who would fit into Warnock’s system very well. Middlesbrough would have to fend off the likes of Celtic and Rangers to his signature.

Kwadwo Baah

Age – 17

Position – Winger

The Stuttgart born Englishman is having a breakthrough season at Rochdale and the media have linked Boro with a move for the young player. At just 17, he has already scored his first professional goal. As many Boro fans will not be shy to admit, there are not many better managers at developing young players than Neil Warnock. Would be a move that would suit both parties.

Jack Diamond

Age – 20

Position - Winger

Diamond was born in Gateshead and has come through the Academy of Light at Sunderland. He spent last season on loan at Harrogate Town where he enjoyed a successful spell at the National League outfit, helping them to a promotion to the football league.

He had struggled to get into the Sunderland team under Phil Parkinson but since the change in management, he has featured a lot more. Contributing a goal and an assist since December.

Thomas Robert

Age – 20

Position – Winger

The young French midfielder won’t be a stranger to the North East having his father, Laurent, been a professional footballer for Newcastle United. It was a surprising decision for him to move to Scottish League 1 outfit Airdrieonians from Montpellier B with top clubs such as Rangers and Celtic reportedly courting after him. However, it is a move that seems to have paid off; the winger has registered 5 goal contributions in 9 league games for the Scottish side. He is out of contract in the summer and Airdrie could be tempted to sell for a fee rather than letting him go for cheaper than they’d like.

Aaron-Salem Boupenza

Age – 24

Position – Forward

The Gabon international is benefitting from regular first-team football having just moved to Turkish side Hatayspor in the summer. Since the move, he has scored 10 goals in 14 appearances. Boro needs to add more goals to their game if we are to reach a top 6 finish. Signing an in-form goalscorer will solidify our intent.

Mattie Pollock

Age – 19

Position – Centreback

The Middlesbrough born defender came through Leeds United’s academy as a midfielder before honing his skills as a defender at Grimsby. He had his breakthrough season last term as Ian Holloway gave him the captains armband at just 18. He has since been a mainstay in the Grimsby squad as they battle for football league survival. His recent performances have attracted interest from the likes of Leicester City and Fulham. He is a tall and strong defender who will no doubt improve in a Warnock side.

Caleb Chukwuemeka

Age – 18

Position – Forward

A signing predominantly for our development squad, Caleb has enjoyed some first-team experience for Northampton having featured 12 times for the League 1 side this season, scoring one goal. He is a player who is adjudged to be a bright prospect with a high potential if nurtured correctly.
